Vintage carpenter's bit brace with a group of wood auger bits. The black turned wood center handle is stamped in gold letters COMPANION, the second line brand Sears sold alongside Craftsman, and the style shows up on braces from the middle of the twentieth century. The brace has a nickel finish steel frame, a black turned wood head knob that spins freely, a ratchet collar behind the chuck for tight corners, and a two jaw chuck with a knurled shell that opens and closes smoothly. The sweep is roughly ten inches. The auger bits are single twist wood augers with lead screws and square tapered tangs cut to fit the brace chuck. They run several diameters, the longest measuring a full twelve inches and the shorter ones about six to nine inches. Condition on the brace is good with plating wear, a few small rust freckles on the frame, and a clean tight chuck. The bits show honest age with dark patina, surface rust in spots, and cutting edges that will want a file and oil before use. Estimated Value: $30 to $50 based on comparable recent sales. Sold as-is.
