Excellent selection of a Marlene Dietrich framed portrait photo, perfect for any Golden Age of Hollywood collector or enthusiast. The portrait seems to originally be taken by photographer Don English in late 1932. This was all done to promote Dietrich’s 1932 film directed by Josef von Sternberg. The photograph is a masterful example of Classic Hollywood glamour, designed specifically to project a sense of aloof mystery and ethereal beauty. This was done using the chiaroscuro effect of using direct spotlight to dramatically enhance darkness and Butterfly lighting from above to give the subject a halo effect. Dietrich is showcases in a 3/4ths profile with her arms crossed, specifically displaying her 128-carat multi-row emerald and diamond bracelet and matching emerald ring, pieces that were actually from her own collection. Marlene Dietrich (1901–1992) was one of the most enduring and culturally significant icons of the 20th century. With a career that spanned more than half a century, she evolved from a German starlet into a Hollywood box-office powerhouse. Her life was significantly impacted when she was cast in “The Blue Angel” (1930), Germany’s first major sound film. She was then signed to Paramount pictures, being considered the rival to MGM’s Greta Garbo. This photograph is connection to “Blonde Venus” (1932), a landmark Pre-Code Hollywood melodrama. Don English (1901-1964) was a prominent Hollywood still photographer who worked extensively for Paramount Pictures during the Golden Age of cinema. He was directly responsible for capturing iconic promotional portraits, productions still, and behind-the scenes moments that defined the public images of major stars. Some of his produced photographs with Dietrich are considered some of his best works. This photograph has been framed, matted, and placed under glass. The overall presentation measures 31” H x 27” W with the interior picture measuring 19” H x 15” W. The frame displays a unique mirrored effect, adding to the glitz and Hollywood glamor of the subject. It does look like the frame is of antique to vintage origin and there is clearly established wear to the frame. Interior print looks to be in great condition based upon general overview. *Note* This photograph holds the exact same frame as Lot # 55 - Jean Harlow Portrait Photograph by George Hurrell. The Jean Harlow portrait came with a notation that it was possibly hung in the front offices of Paramount Studios. There is no note attached to the Dietrich portrait, but with the exact same frame being showcased, there is a possibility that both came from that origination.
