Unique selection of an antique piece of framed art, perfect for collecting and home display. This selection is entitled “Nature Morte A La Guitare” or “Still Life with Guitar” and was produced by infamous artist Pablo Picasso. Notably Picasso produced dozens of works featuring the “Still Life with Guitar” theme throughout his career as the instrument was one of his most enduring and transformative symbols. He visited this subject across multiple mediums including oil, drawing, and sculptures, but the interesting note is that specific time periods saw intense differences on theme. This direct version of “Still Life with Guitar” is part of Picasso’s “Wartime Still Lifes” in which the artist revisited themes with a darker and somber tone as he resided in Nazi occupied Paris. Unlike the vibrant colors of his earlier works, this 1940’s edition used a restrained and muted palette. Primary tones are dominated by tones of blue. The image is a tabletop scene where objects are broken into overlapping geometric planes, a style known as “Synthetic Cubism”. The Guitar serves as a visual anchor and around it sits a selection of wartime objects, specifically a Sabre with a blood-red handle and some leisure comforts in the form of a wine glass, cigar, and olives. There is also a ghostly mirror in the background that adds an element of claustrophobia and uneasiness to the atmosphere. Picasso’s “Wartime Still Lifes” were produced from 1937-1945 with the painting “Nature Morte A La Guitare” being painted in 1942. In 1943, Picasso personally curated 16 paintings of his portfolio to be selected as an “artist-authorized official record” for this period of the artists life. The printing of the was conducted by Maurice Girodias of “Editions du Chene” (name of the publisher) at the “Cliches Union et Mansat” (a specialized Parisian printing studio). Because these were printed in in the winter of 1943 during German occupation, the studio had to work under extreme material shortages. Prints produced directly by the “Cliches Union et Mansat” are highly valued even further for their historical significance and superior production quality compared to later mass printings. “Editions du Chene” prints were released as an unnumbered limited edition so there are no formal edition numbers with the piece. Framed, matted, and under glass, this print is in great high-quality form and overall measures 19.5” H x 17. 5” W. The interior print measures approx. 11” H x 9” W. The work also comes with a formal Certificate of Authenticity that points to its scarcity.
