ca. dated 1886; The "Smith Bridge Co., Toledo, OH" was established in 1870, under the ownership of Robert W. Smith who received a patent for a truss design for wooden bridge construction. The company specialized from 1870-1890 in pre-fab of wooden bridge truss-systems for use with wooden covered bridges. After 1890, the company transitioned in similar pre-fabricated steel bridges. This transitional era bridge plaque is cast iron large size with angular mount and decorative accents to sides and top. The plaque has embossed lettering and is believed to be from atop the entrance into a wooden covered bridge.; 57" x 6 3/4" x 22"; Condition: This piece is very heavy. "As found", extensive rust to upper crest from exposure to weather.
