ca. Late 19th-early 20th century; 1.Attributed to Arthur W. Davis, Newport, N.H. in a marbleized and gilded edge frame. The drawing is pencil and crayon on old composition paper of a sawmill scene. It depicts three men working a "slat" sawmill that is being powered by an upright steam engine on drag sleigh. A secondary lower drawing depicts a carpenter beside a display of "slat" siding. The engine is skillfully drawn to proportion with flywheel and belt-line powering the "slat" mill, 11 1/4" x 8 1/4", Condition: Not removed from frame for cataloging, no damage. Owner written note on reverse of frame attributing to 'Arthur W. Davis, done in 1880's. Newport, New Hampshire". Interesting historical note - from History of Keene, N.H.: 1885, a Fred W. Davis, purchased an old mill established in 1797, "on the North Branch (Beech Hill). The mill was producing shoe pegs, shingles, and continuing as a Gristmill. It was used until 1913, when the dam was destroyed. This image is possibly after that dam failure, when an engine was bought to replace the water power. 2. Unattributed pencil and watercolor on bond paper student crafted with tan color mule hitched to a blue painted two-wheel cart and framed in a gold leaf molded frame, 14" x 9 1/4", Condition: Not removed from frame, no damage.
