Ernest Hemingway. To Have and Have Not. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1937. This octavo volume is a first edition, later printing, as identified by the 1937 date on the title page and the absence of the letter A on the copyright page,a mark required for first printings by this publisher during this period. The book is bound in the original black cloth with gilt-stamped lettering on the spine and front board. It includes the original pictorial dust jacket designed byNeely, which retains the original 2.50 dollar price on the front flap and features a photograph of the author by Joris Ivens on the rear panel. The internal text begins on page 3 and is preceded by the standard legal disclaimer note and acopyright page bearing the Scribner Press seal. The dust jacket is in fair condition with significant wear. There is a large area of surface abrasion (skinning) on the front panel that obscures a portion of the title text. The jacket also shows heavy chipping and loss at the head and tail.
