Vintage Navajo pottery vessel by noted potter Alice Cling, accompanied by its original Museum of Northern Arizona, Flagstaff – Navajo Craftsman Exhibition tag. The original museum tag identifies the artist as Alice Cling, the article simply as “Pot,” and, wonderfully, lists the place as “Hanks TP” (Hank’s Trading Post). The tag is numbered X216 and shows an original price of $19.00. An orange inventory sticker on the tag is additionally marked “1922 MCB.” The pot has a beautifully rounded, low-profile form with a dark fired surface displaying rich black, charcoal and warm brown tonal variations characteristic of traditional Navajo pottery. The simple form and naturally varied firing give the piece a wonderful understated presence. Measures approximately 3" tall x 4" wide. The surviving Museum of Northern Arizona exhibition tag is particularly desirable, providing direct attribution to Alice Cling as well as the unusual Hank’s Trading Post provenance. A great documented piece of Navajo pottery with an especially interesting Arizona history. Vintage condition with natural firing and surface variations consistent with handmade pottery. See photos for details and condition.
