Bob White Signed Original Golf Cartoon Illustration Art – Jan. 20, 1949 Original hand-painted cartoon illustration by Bob White, noted cartoonist and longtime Archie Comics artist, depicting a humorous golf scene in which an unfortunate golfer has apparently been struck in the head by a golf ball while two startled golfers look on from the hill above. Executed as a fully realized color illustration on artist’s board, with inked outlines and painted color throughout. The composition has a wonderfully exaggerated mid-century cartoon quality, with expressive characters, detailed golf attire and equipment, and a particularly amusing visual punchline created by the golf ball landing in the water after striking the golfer. Signed "Bob White" by the artist at lower right. The reverse of the board bears manufacturer’s markings as well as a “JAN 20 1949” date stamp, providing an unusually specific period reference for the piece. Bob White would later become closely associated with Archie Comics, working extensively with Archie and its related characters and becoming particularly notable for his work on The Fly, The Shield, Archie’s Madhouse and other titles. This early 1949 illustration offers an interesting example of White’s cartooning outside of his better-known comic-book work and predates much of the material for which collectors recognize him today. The artwork comes from the same collection of Bob White original artwork and production material represented throughout this auction. Condition: Vintage condition with visible surface wear, rubbing/scuffing, edge and corner wear, small losses and other age-related imperfections. The reverse exhibits toning and wear consistent with age. Despite these issues, the colors remain attractive and the image displays very well. Please examine all photographs for condition.
