Appearing to date from the late 19th to early 20th century, this black shoulder capelet is densely embellished with black seed and bugle beads arranged in scrolling floral and foliate patterns. The design features a high standing collar, pointed front and back yokes, hook-and-eye front closure, faceted black glass accents, and long cascading beaded fringe extending across the front, shoulders, and back. The interior is finished with black textile lining; no maker's label or identifying mark is visible making it more than likely as handmade. The capelet shows substantial age-related wear, including scattered bead loss, broken and shortened fringe strands, loose threads, fraying, and deterioration to the underlying fabric and lining, particularly around the collar and shoulder areas. Areas of exposed stitching and fabric loss are visible, though much of the decorative beadwork remains intact and visually striking. Measures about 16 in. across the shoulders and 18 in. at the longest point including fringe. This is in good antique condition considering it is over 110 years old. An ornate surviving example of turn-of-the-century beaded fashion, displaying the elaborate handwork and dramatic silhouette associated with late Victorian and Edwardian evening and formal accessories.
