Colt Detective Special .38 SPL

Updated August 24, 2026

This Colt Detective Special double-action/single-action revolver is chambered in .38 Special and represents one of Colt’s most iconic compact revolver designs. Serial number P34644, this example features an approximately 2.25" barrel with a shiny bore and remains in good cosmetic condition overall, although significant condition issues are present. The revolver is built around a steel frame with an exposed hammer, swing-out cylinder, and aftermarket grips that give it a personalized appearance. Plenty of visible rust is present throughout and should be carefully reviewed in the photographs. More importantly, the cylinder does not lock properly, so this revolver will need work before it can safely operate. The Detective Special was introduced by Colt in the early 20th century and became especially popular with detectives, plainclothes officers, and civilians who wanted a compact six-shot revolver. Despite its current mechanical issue, this example offers classic Colt history and makes an interesting restoration or gunsmith project. Please see photos.
