Edo Period Japanese color woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi from the series "Genji Clouds Matched with Ukiyo-e Pictures" (Genji-gumo ukiyo-e awase). This example represents Chapter 17, "Eawase" (Picture Contest), paired with the figure Yaegaki-hime. The composition depicts the elegantly dressed Yaegaki-hime reclining beside a writing table, surrounded by elaborate textile patterns and a scroll-form cartouche above. Kuniyoshi's signature "Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga" appears at right, together with seals and publisher markings. A finely detailed example of mid-19th-century ukiyo-e, displaying Kuniyoshi's characteristic use of intricate textile patterns, expressive figural composition, and layered literary imagery. The print has been professionally backed with linen for preservation and stabilization. Antique condition with overall toning, scattered spotting, staining, surface wear, and other age-related imperfections. Please review photographs carefully for condition. 14 1/4" x 9 1/4". Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861, Japan) was a leading artist of the Utagawa school and one of the most influential ukiyo-e designers of the late Edo Period. He is particularly celebrated for his warrior subjects, historical and legendary scenes, beautiful women, landscapes, and imaginative compositions.
