Manufactured by the Rice-Stix Dry Goods Co. of St. Louis, Missouri, this United States military footlocker is dated July 18, 1940. The chest is constructed of a wood or fiberboard core clad in metal or vulcanized fiber with a matte olivedrab painted finish. It features riveted construction with reinforced metal corner brackets. The hardware includes two outer drawbolt latches and a central locking mechanism. The sides are fitted with two thick leather carry handlessecured by heavy-duty metal brackets. The interior contains the original removable wooden lift-out tray with a central divider. An oval brass identification plate riveted to the lid is inscribed: STOCK NO. 26-L-294, TENT SPEC JUNE 12,1940, CONT. NO. W199-QM-18736, COMO JULY 18, 1940, RICE-STIX DRY GOODS CO. The lid and back panels show black and blue marker notations from historical use.This footlocker displays expected wear and authentic character consistent with its age and military field use. The exterior surface shows typical scuffing and paint loss, while the metal hardware and leather handles remain sturdy and intact.
