Several cloaked figures are rendered with dramatic shadows created by meticulous cross-hatching, suggesting a vibrant setting bathed in strong light. Unsigned. Unframed. Henry Ossawa Tanner (1859-1937) was an American painter and a disciple of Thomas Eakins. He achieved international recognition as the first African-American painter to do so. After moving to Paris in 1891 for study, Tanner found significant success within French artistic circles, where he subsequently remained.
