Nikolai Roerich (Russian, 1874-1947) This oil on canvas depicts a vibrant mountain village scene, rendered in a stylized manner with terracotta and ochre hills, bright yellow and red buildings, set against a vivid blue sky and distant blue mountains. Monogrammed 'N.R.' in the lower left. Framed. Nikolai Roerich was a prolific Russian artist, philosopher, writer, archaeologist, and public figure, known for painting over 7,000 canvases and writing over thirty literary works. He was a driving force behind the international agreement for the protection of cultural heritage, famously known as the "Roerich Pact."
