Cosmovision and Cultural Memory Master Hand-Engraved Gourd Sculpture. This extraordinary Andean Cosmovision and Cultural Memory is a completely original hand-engraved gourd sculpture by internationally recognized Peruvian master artisan Cristian Tonino Alfaro Nunez. Created from the naturally rounded fruit of the gourd, the work transforms an organic material into an exceptionally intricate narrative surface celebrating Peru's ancestral heritage, natural environment, architecture, spirituality, and collective memory. The composition is organized around a monumental chakana, or Andean cross, enclosing a finely detailed circular medallion. At its center appears an Andean mountain landscape surrounded by a calendar-like sequence of symbolic images. This commanding central design is framed by an extraordinary profusion of flowers, birds, hands, spirals, geometric borders, architectural scenes, and miniature narrative elements extending across the curved surface. Every section has been patiently incised by hand with a burin. Fine lines, stippling, cross-hatching, and contrasting darkened areas create remarkable depth and tonal variation without diminishing the warm natural coloration of the gourd. The density of the imagery rewards close observation, revealing new figures and details as the sculpture is viewed from different angles. The chakana is one of the most recognizable geometric forms associated with the Andean world. Within this work, it serves as the visual heart of a broader meditation on land, cultural continuity, human creativity, and the relationship between communities and their environment. The surrounding motifs create a panoramic visual narrative rather than a merely decorative pattern. The execution of a mate of this complexity requires exceptional precision, patience, and control. Each line must follow the irregular curvature of the natural fruit, making corrections extremely difficult and ensuring that no two works can ever be identical. The result is a unique collector's piece combining ancestral technique, contemporary artistic vision, and extraordinary manual virtuosity. ARTIST Cristian Tonino Alfaro Nunez is a distinguished Peruvian master of mate burilado from Cochas Grande, Junin, a community renowned as one of the principal centers of traditional gourd engraving in Peru. He belongs to the celebrated Alfaro Nunez family, whose members have preserved and transmitted the art of burilado through successive generations. Alfaro Nunez received first prize in the national competition Para quitarse el sombrero in the category devoted to the preservation of traditions. His artistic practice has also reached international markets, and official Peruvian cultural records document the acquisition of one of his representative works for exhibition and promotion of traditional Peruvian art. PROVENANCE Acquired directly from the artist in Peru for Gallery Arts & Auctions Co. AUTHEN
