A lot of two antique German dolls featuring bisque socket heads on ball-jointed composition and wood bodies. The first doll is by Heinrich Handwerck and is incised Made in Germany G3 on the reverse of the neck and retains a partial blue ink Handwerck stamp on the torso. It features brown glass sleep eyes, painted lashes, and a long auburn wig. The doll is dressed in a blue and white patterned dress with black lace and ribbon accents over a cotton slip and pantaloons, completed with black knit stockings and buckled shoes. The second doll is manufactured by J.D. Kestner and is incised Made in Germany B4 on the back of the neck. This example possesses brown glass sleep eyes, multi-stroke eyebrows, and a blonde curly mohair wig. It is costumed in a peach-colored period-style lace dress with white socks and brown leather lace-up shoes. G3 marked doll: 24 inches B4 marked doll: 23 inches. Both dolls present in good overall condition with some expected age-related wear to the composition bodies including minor crazing and finish loss. The bisque heads appear free of damage.
