1871 Two-Cent Piece, struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This is a late-date issue from the short-lived Two-Cent Piece series and an interesting piece of early U.S. coinage. Please review the photos for the exact condition, surfaces, color, and overall appearance. The Two-Cent Piece was first introduced in 1864 and is historically significant as the first U.S. coin to bear the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The obverse features a shield with the motto above it, while the reverse displays a large “2” surrounded by a wreath. The 1871 issue had a mintage of only 721,250 coins, making it one of the lower-mintage circulation strikes of the series. The Two-Cent Piece was discontinued in 1873, adding to the appeal of these late-date examples.
