1870 Two Cent Piece

1870 Two-Cent Piece, struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This historic U.S. coin is from the final years of the short-lived Two-Cent Piece series and is a popular type coin for collectors of early American denominations. Please review the photos for the exact condition, surfaces, color, and overall appearance. The Two-Cent Piece was first introduced in 1864 and holds the distinction of being the first U.S. coin to feature the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The obverse displays a shield with the motto above, while the reverse features a large numeral 2 surrounded by a wreath. The 1870 Two-Cent Piece had a mintage of just 1,721,000 coins, making it one of the lower-mintage circulation issues of the series. Production of the Two-Cent Piece ended in 1873, making the 1870 an interesting late-series date. The coin was struck in bronze, composed primarily of copper with tin and zinc, and weighs approximately 6.22 grams. Philadelphia Mint examples carry no mint mark.
