NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > Matched pair of Chinese Chippendale-style wingback armchairs, each measuring approximately 26" wide across the arms x 22" deep x 44" tall. Each chair features a tall upholstered back, narrow shaped wings, rolled arms and a tight seat, raised on dark-finished square wood legs joined by distinctive open geometric box stretchers. Both retain bold period upholstery in a printed cotton or linen-type fabric, combining a warm beige ground with cream lattice-like vertical bands and oversized blossoms in shades of pink, blue, ivory, coral and green. The exuberant floral pattern has an almost modernistic, flower-power quality, reflecting the late 1960s and 1970s fascination with vivid botanical designs and the broader visual culture associated with the Flower Child era. Though paired with formal Chinese Chippendale-style frames, the intentionally “loud” textile gives the chairs an unexpected mod and bohemian character now suited to maximalist, grandmillennial and eclectic interiors. Chinese Chippendale design developed from the Chinese-inspired furniture patterns popularized by English cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale during the 18th century. The style is recognized for straight architectural lines, angular fretwork and geometric lattice forms. On this pair, that influence is expressed most clearly through the square legs and open geometric stretcher bases, creating a strong visual contrast with the traditional upholstered wingback form. Dating approximately to the late 1960s through the 1970s, the pair combines a formal Chinese Chippendale-inspired furniture design with the era’s increasingly bold and expressive floral textiles. No manufacturer’s labels were found. Both chairs are substantial, sturdy and comfortable, with matching proportions and closely comparable upholstery tone. CONDITION REPORT > Present attractively overall. As discovered, not cleaned or altered. The exposed wood elements could benefit from basic cleaning and polishing to remove accumulated surface dust.
