ENGLISH REGENCY Mahogany VELVET SOFA by HICKORY

NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > Measuring 72" W x 30" D x 32" H to the serpentine back, this vintage Hickory Chair Company sofa is crafted in a refined traditional form with an exposed wood frame appearing to be mahogany. The shaped crest follows the softly undulating back and continues into sweeping upholstered arms, ending in carved scroll-form hand rests above slender tapered legs. A center support beneath the long seat provides added stability, while the completed upholstered reverse allows the sofa to be positioned freely within a room rather than exclusively against a wall. The design draws principally from English Regency and Federal-era furniture traditions, particularly through the low serpentine profile, restrained carved woodwork, outward-sweeping arms and light tapered legs. Rather than reproducing a single historic model, the sofa interprets those early 19th-century elements in the polished traditional manner favored by American furniture manufacturers during the later 20th century. Its long, uninterrupted bench cushion and gently curved silhouette give the piece a lighter and more graceful appearance than a heavily skirted or overstuffed sofa. Upholstered in what might be considered as pale celadon or mint green color velvet, the sofa features a fitted tight back, fully upholstered interior and exterior sides, self-piped borders and a single removable bench cushion. The muted green upholstery complements the warm reddish-brown wood and gives the sofa particular suitability for a formal living room, traditional parlor, library, reception area or bedroom sitting space. The restrained 72" length also makes it appropriate as a substantial settee beneath a large window, opposite a fireplace or floating within a conversational seating arrangement. Hickory Chair traces its history to a chair-making operation established in North Carolina in the early 20th century and recognizes 1911 as the beginning of the Hickory Chair name. The company initially specialized in made-to-order dining chairs before expanding into a broad line of traditionally inspired furniture based upon historic forms and periods. Hickory Chair became particularly associated with American-made, upper-end furniture combining classical design references with customizable upholstery and finishes. A label beneath the seat cushion reads ~ HICKORY CHAIR COMPANY ~ FINE FURNITURE SINCE 1911 ~ HICKORY, N.C. CONDITION REPORT > Present attractively overall. The velvet upholstery exhibits age-related fading, discoloration, spotting, surface wear and variation in the nap, particularly across the loose bench cushion. The exposed wood frame retains an attractive polished appearance with expected minor surface wear. As discovered, not cleaned or altered.
