1970s HOWARD MILLER BARWICK CHIME MANTEL CLOCK

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Despite a condition issue as noted below, a nice example of a vintage 1970s Howard Miller Barwick No. 142 mantel or bracket clock, Model 4992, housed in a substantial warm brown wood case with a stepped architectural base, molded cornice, arched upper gallery, hinged glazed front door, and dark metal carrying handle. The brass tone dial features a silvered chapter ring with black Roman numerals, minute markings, ornate black hands, textured center field, cast foliate corner ornaments, and three key winding arbors. The removable rear access panel retains the original Howard Miller Clock Company paper label identifying Zeeland, Michigan, and Model 4992. The clock incorporates an eight-day, three-train mechanical movement offering timekeeping, quarter-hour chimes, and hour strikes. Barwick Model 4992 examples are documented as triple-chime clocks, allowing a choice among three melodies, with chiming on each quarter hour and the hour count sounded afterward. Howard Miller was established in Zeeland, Michigan, in 1926 by Howard C. Miller and became particularly known for finely made chiming mantel, wall, and floor clocks. The far-left winding arbor, which powers the hour-strike train, meets tension but does not produce normal ratchet clicks or clear winding engagement. The strike train is therefore not functioning properly and may have a failed click mechanism, detached or broken mainspring, or another internal mechanical fault requiring professional clock service. Every function has not been tested over a full eight-day cycle, and the clock should not be represented as fully functional. Therefore, leaving the left arbor unwound or nonfunctional should not prevent the clock from keeping time or playing the quarter-hour chimes, provided the center and right trains are wound and operating. At the top and every quarter of the hour, it will play the complete chime melody but then fail to strike the number of hours on the hour. Howard Miller distinguishes the melody or chime operation from the separate hour-strike function in mechanical chiming clocks. CONDITION REPORT > As discovered, the center timekeeping and right chime trains have been wound. The clock has run and kept time during a limited test period and produced a chime sequence. However, after chiming at the hour, the clock did not sound the expected corresponding hour strikes.
