AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > A 1976 Society of American Foresters National Convention commemorative medal measuring 1.5 inches in diameter and weighing approximately 0.75 ounce. The bronze tone metal medal was issued for the organization’s national convention held October 3 through 7, 1976, in New Orleans, Louisiana. The obverse displays SOCIETY OF AMERICAN FORESTERS 1900 within a shield, surrounded by NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA and 1976 NATIONAL CONVENTION. The reverse commemorates the United States Bicentennial with the dates 1776 and 1976, the wording BICENTENNIAL OF THE U.S.A. and a relief image of a quill pen, inkwell and historic document. The imagery references the 200th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, celebrated nationally during 1976. The New Orleans convention carried the theme FORESTRY FOR AMERICA’S FUTURE: BEYOND THE BICENTENNIAL and brought together forestry professionals from the United States and abroad to consider environmental protection, forest resources and future energy needs. Proceedings from the convention were published by the Society of American Foresters in 1977. Founded in 1900 by Gifford Pinchot and seven fellow forestry professionals, the Society of American Foresters became the principal national professional organization devoted to forestry science, education and practice. The convention association, New Orleans designation and United States Bicentennial imagery give the medal appeal for collectors of forestry history, professional organization memorabilia, Louisiana convention souvenirs and 1976 Bicentennial commemoratives.
