1948 TEENTIMERS CLUB WISHING STAR GIRL RADIO SHOW

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > An original numbered invitation to the TEENTIMERS CLUB Mutual coast to coast radio broadcast presented Saturday, August 28, 1948, at Fort Whiting Auditorium in Mobile, Alabama. Printed on pink card stock measuring 3.5 x 4.125 inches, the invitation is numbered 656 and prominently notes I HOPE I AM THE WISHING STAR GIRL. TEENTIMERS CLUB was a nationally broadcast Saturday morning musical variety program created for teenage listeners. Sponsored by the women’s clothing company Teen Timers Inc., the Mutual network version began in March 1948 and combined popular vocal performances with visiting name bands and audience participation. Andy Russell served as singing host, with Dean Hudson and his band appearing for this Mobile broadcast and Fred Robbins serving as announcer. Contemporary radio schedules confirm that the August 1948 program originated from Mobile and was carried over the Mutual network. The WISHING STAR GIRL wording relates to a national TEENTIMERS CLUB promotional contest in which teenage girls competed to become the WISHING STAR GIRL OF THE WEEK and appear on the radio program. Period advertisements promoted a trip to New York, a weekend at the Waldorf, a complete back to school wardrobe and additional runner up prizes. The statement I HOPE I AM THE WISHING STAR GIRL indicates that this invitation was connected to that audience contest and promotional feature rather than serving only as general admission. The card notes that doors opened at 9:00 A.M., closed at 10:25 A.M., and instructs the holder to PRESENT THIS INVITATION AT THE DOOR. The early closing time reflects the controlled seating required before a live national radio broadcast began. Andy Russell was a major American popular singer of the 1940s, recognized for romantic recordings combining English and Spanish lyrics. Dean Hudson was the professional name used by trumpeter, vocalist and swing orchestra leader Marion Elsworth Brown, whose nationally touring band developed from a University of Florida dance orchestra. Fred Robbins was a prominent radio announcer and disc jockey who later became known for syndicated broadcasting, television hosting and celebrity interviews. Fort Whiting was a National Guard armory and military complex near Brookley Field in Mobile. The auditorium also accommodated civic gatherings and public entertainment, providing the venue for this live Mobile originating edition of the nationally heard program.
