This black enameled Imperial-style merit cross features a gold-tone frame, crowned suspension, and crossed swords. The obverse center medallion displays a Hohenzollern eagle device, while the reverse center medallion features the date 1919 (rather than 1918). It is accompanied by two unattached ribbons—one black and yellow striped, the other gold and white—both showing period fraying and edge damage. The cross measures approximately 2.2 by 2.0 inches (55 mm x 50 mm). Condition issues include significant enamel loss on the lower cross arm exposing the copper-toned base metal, minor enamel cracking on the upper arm, surface wear, and light tarnish to the gold-toned finish.
