A striking pair of vintage pewter candlesticks modeled as cranes, symbolizing longevity, perched amidst dense, stylized bushes. Each crane supports a floral-form candle holder in its beak and is elevated by an architectural hexagonal base with pierced gallery-work. The craftsmanship is highlighted by independent, etched wings wired to the bodies for added dimension. A rich contrast of materials is achieved through the use of brass and copper inlays on the heads, eyes, and hardware. The undersides of both bases bear traditional debossed Chinese hallmarks. Provenance: From the estate of Dr. Andres Onate, former Dean of East Asian Studies at the University of Arizona. Dr. Onate served in China for the US State Department in the early 1980s and again in the early 1990s. These were most likely purchased in China during the early 1990s. MEASUREMENTS 14 ½ in (38.8 cm) tall x 6 ½ in (16.5 cm) long x 5 ½ (14.0 cm) in wide Weighs 5 lbs 3.7 oz. CONDITION There are a few scratches on the metal but otherwise, no damages. The candlesticks sit evenly and do not wobble. Because the metal is soft, many pieces bend a bit, but they can be easily bent back. A highly decorative pair, these candlesticks combine classical auspicious symbolism with an intricate multi-metal construction that adds exceptional texture and visual depth.
