A late 19th C or early 20th C Chinese porcelain jar featuring a distinctive hand-painted iron-red Buddhist lion or "Foo dog" motif accompanied by calligraphy on the back and lid. The jar has a white glazed background with high-contrast red designs and a matching lid. The raised, rounded footing is unglazed, revealing an off-white clay. The jar has an export sticker and stamp under the lid. Provenance: From the estate of Dr. Andres Onate, former Dean of East Asian Studies at the University of Arizona. Dr. Onate served in China for the US State Department in the early 1980s and again in the early 1990s. This item was purchased in Beijing c 1982. MEASUREMENTS 5 in (12.7 cm) diameter x 6 in (15.2 cm) tall. Weighs 1 lb 6.7 oz. CONDITION No chips or cracks. The lid appear to be original to the piece. Other than light wear to the script on the body, the glazes are in good condition. The jar has typical kiln flaws, such as pitting, bumps and a few black spots. With its bold iron-red iconography and impeccable provenance, this piece is a quintessential find for the discerning collector of Chinese export art.
