This is a specialized astronomy hardcover edited by John R. Percy, Janet Akyuz Mattei, and Christiaan Sterken, published by Cambridge University Press in 1992. ISBN 0-521-40469-X / 9780521404693. It contains the proceedings of the first European meeting of the American Association of Variable Star Observers, held in Brussels, Belgium, July 24–28, 1990. Bibliographic records indicate approximately + 329 pages. This is an academic reference work on variable stars and whose brightness changes over time. The 38 professional contributions discuss the history and organization of variable-star research, international cooperation, major classes of variable stars, amateur astronomers' contributions, catalogs of variable stars, visual observation and photometry, photographic and photoelectric observing, CCD techniques, supernova searches, and research projects that can be undertaken with relatively modest observing equipment. It was intended for professional astronomers, advanced amateur observers, researchers, and astronomy students. Good used condition. The hardcover binding is solid and the pages clean, intact, and bright. There is moderate exterior shelf and handling wear, including rubbing/scuffing, small spots and marks on the blue covers, bumped and rubbed corners, and wear at the spine ends. There appears to be some discoloration or toning along the page edges. A previous owner's name, “George M”, is handwritten on the front endpaper, and no dust jacket.
