Title: Cubist Portrait of a Seated Woman in a Blue and Purple Dress Technique: Oil on canvas Measures: 24 x 20 inches (61.0 x 50.8 cm) Year: 1938 (dated 16.2.38 on the reverse) Condition: Appears in good overall condition, with strong coloration, clearly defined painted contours, and visible variations in brushwork and surface texture. Minor surface irregularities and age-related wear may be present. Presented in a medium-brown wooden frame showing light surface wear, particularly at the corners and edges. The reverse displays a canvas support secured to a wooden stretcher, with visible discoloration, minor handling marks, and wear along the exposed canvas edges. A hanging wire is attached to the reverse. Not examined out of the frame. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: The piece was acquired in 2011 through a private sale by a North American collector. It was offered at auction in 2018 and purchased by a European private collection, where it remains. Visual Description: A stylized portrait depicts a seated woman with an angular face, elongated dark hair, and a broad red-and-green hat. Her facial features are divided into contrasting planes of pink, yellow, and ochre, creating a striking interplay of frontal and profile perspectives. The figure wears an elaborate blue and purple dress with radiating linear patterns, geometric folds, and colorful decorative accents. Her hands rest across her lap, while the angular wooden chair and dark turquoise tiled floor establish a structured interior setting. The composition reflects the visual language of Cubism through fragmented anatomy, flattened perspective, bold outlines, and expressive color relationships. A painted inscription reading “Picasso” appears in the upper left corner. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
