Title: Figures Holding a Television Beneath a Radiant Atom Technique: Chalk on paper Measures: 12 x 9 inches (approximately 30.5 x 22.9 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in good overall condition. The work displays crisp white chalk line work against a dark black ground, with visible brush texture in the black paper surface. Minor surface wear, light smudging of the chalk, and age-related imperfections may be present, with toning and staining on the reverse. Presented in a brushed pewter-toned frame with a flat profile. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: Private collection, Detroit, Michigan; reportedly purchased privately in the 2020s. Previous ownership information was conveyed verbally by the consignor. Visual Description: A graphic composition drawn in white chalk on a black ground, enclosed within a simple rectangular border. Two stylized figures, each marked with an X on the torso, stand with arms raised to hold a large television set overhead. On the screen, two smaller figures lift their arms beneath a miniature atom, framed by radiating lines, while dials and a small grid line the side of the set. Above, a large atomic symbol with orbiting electrons glows with short radiating strokes. Along the bottom, bands of short horizontal dashes suggest water or ground. Rendered in the street-art style of Keith Haring, the work emphasizes economy of line, symbolic imagery, and social commentary, recalling the artist’s celebrated chalk drawings on black paper made in the New York City subway during the early 1980s. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
