Title: Torn Soup Can with Figure in Sunglasses Technique: Gouache on paper Measures: 12 x 9 inches (approximately 30.5 x 22.9 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in good overall condition. The work displays crisp red, white, gray, and gold coloration, clean ink contours, and finely rendered tonal detail. Minor surface wear, light handling marks, and age-related imperfections may be present, with tape residue and scattered marks on the reverse. Presented unframed. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: Private collection, Rome; reportedly acquired by private transaction during the 1950s. Previous ownership details were conveyed verbally. Visual Description: A bold Pop Art-inspired composition depicting a large condensed soup can whose red and white label has been torn open down the center. Through the tear, a man with dark swept-back hair and black sunglasses emerges, rendered in black, white, and gray, one hand raised thoughtfully to his chin. Fragments of the label curl outward on either side, showing script lettering, partial words, gold medallions, and a band of gold fleur-de-lis motifs. The silver-gray can rim and metallic body are modeled with soft shading against the plain white sheet. A large black script signature-style inscription runs beneath the can. Rendered in the Pop Art style of Andy Warhol, the work emphasizes consumer imagery, celebrity, and graphic clarity, recalling the artist’s celebrated Campbell’s Soup Can series and his fascination with fame and mass production. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
