Joan Miró Spanish 1893–1983 Mixed Media on Paper

Updated October 15, 2026

Title: Constellation of Birds and Figures Technique: Mixed media on paper Measures: 8 x 11.5 inches (20.3 x 29.2 cm) Year: Undated Inscription: Bears a “Miró”-style inscription in the lower-left corner. Condition: Visible light surface wear, minor handling marks and paper toning. Small surface irregularities, pigment variations and natural imperfections in the paper may be present. Condition should be confirmed through firsthand examination. Provenance: From a private Oregon collection. According to family recollection, the work was acquired with a group of modern European artworks during travels to Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, Spain, in 1989. It subsequently remained in the family’s possession. Precise acquisition details and earlier ownership records were not preserved. Visual Description: A lively arrangement of biomorphic figures, birds and celestial symbols extends across the composition. Heavy black lines connect fragmented areas of red, blue, yellow, green and violet, while circular forms and starbursts suggest planets and constellations. The overlapping shapes create a rhythmic sense of movement across the warm-toned paper. The playful abstraction, automatic-looking linework, primary colors and dreamlike vocabulary evoke Surrealism and the visual language associated with Joan Miró. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
