"Fabio Previtali" Orig. – Piazza San Marco Venice

Updated September 22, 2026

Original 1966 Italian architectural watercolor on paper by Fabio Previtali, depicting Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square) in Venice, Italy. This horizontal composition combines several of the square’s celebrated architectural landmarks, including St. Mark’s Campanile, the Clock Tower, columns of the Piazzetta, St. Mark’s Basilica, and the Doge’s Palace, into a unified modernist interpretation. Previtali simplifies the elaborate Venetian architecture into clean geometric forms and translucent washes of blue, green, terracotta, cream, and gray. The work is signed Previtali and dated ’66 at the lower right. His documented career as a Bergamo-based architect makes the strong architectural emphasis throughout the composition particularly fitting. The artwork measures approximately 20.5" x 28", with an overall framed size of 35.25" x 43". An original statement retained on the reverse identifies the subject as Piazza San Marco and explains that the artist combined and simplified its major architectural characteristics to convey the grandeur and richness of Venetian culture within a single composition. An additional ownership label states “Property of Beatrice B. Moeller, Purchased 1970, Westport, CT.” Professionally custom framed by McBride’s Framing Gallery of Tucson with TruGuard UV-protection glazing. One interesting connection: Fabio's father, Cecco Previtali (1918–2003), was an established Bergamo painter and watercolorist whose work was the subject of a posthumous retrospective in Bergamo. Contemporary writing describes Cecco's mature work as moving away from traditional academic figuration toward a distinctive neo-figurative style with transparent washes and delicate tonal color.
