Signed Hans Martin Schleeh (1928–2001) abstract figurative sculpture depicting a reclining mother and child in a highly stylized modernist composition. Schleeh was a German-born Canadian artist known for abstract figurative sculpture and painting. The work features two interconnected, smoothly modeled figures rendered with dramatically simplified forms, rounded contours, and sweeping organic lines. The larger reclining maternal figure cradles and visually surrounds the smaller child figure, creating a strong sense of intimacy while maintaining the sculptural abstraction associated with mid-century and postwar modernist art. The sculpture has a light gray, stone-like surface and is mounted on a substantial geometric base with dark finished edges. An incised artist's mark/signature is visible on the sculpture. Measures approximately 12" high overall with a 16" x 16" base, according to the accompanying estate information. The original handwritten estate note identifying the artist and describing the subject as mother and child accompanies the piece. Shows some surface wear, marks, discoloration, and age-related imperfections consistent with previous display. Exact sculptural medium, date of execution, and title have not been independently verified, so the work is cataloged as untitled. Please note that this is a very heavy and substantial sculpture, and its weight will significantly impact shipping costs. Buyers requiring shipping should take the size and weight of the piece into consideration prior to bidding. A striking example for collectors of Hans Martin Schleeh, Canadian modernist art, mid-century modern sculpture, abstract figurative sculpture, mother and child art, biomorphic sculpture, and postwar modernism. See photos for artist mark, construction, surface, dimensions, and condition.
