Tom Taylor painting, oil on board. Unsigned, framed. 20" X 29". Tom Taylor was a British-born artist, painter, stained-glass artist, and educator who was active in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He came to Halifax from England as an art adviser and was also involved in teaching at what is now the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD). His artistic practice encompassed painting and stained glass, reflecting both his interest in fine art and architectural work. The present work offers a particularly interesting documentary view of Taylor's practice. The painting depicts the artist working on St. Patrick's Church in Halifax, with scaffolding and construction equipment surrounding the building. Taylor himself can be seen working in the lower right corner of the composition, providing a rare glimpse of the artist engaged directly in the creation or restoration of the church's stained-glass work. Beyond its artistic qualities, the painting is an important visual record of Taylor's work in Halifax and of the city's architectural and ecclesiastical heritage.
