Petit, John Louis (British, 1801-1868). Melrose Abbey, watercolor. 1823. Titled, signed and dated verso. Matted in a wood frame. Toning visible at mat edges. Not examined out of frame. Frame 13 1/2" x 11 1/2". John Louis Petit was an English watercolor artist and architectural historian celebrated for his expressive paintings of churches, historic buildings, and landscapes across Britain, Europe, and the Middle East. Working directly from observation, he produced thousands of atmospheric watercolors that combined topographical accuracy with remarkable artistic freedom, earning renewed recognition as one of the most innovative British watercolorists of the nineteenth century.
