David, Michael (American, b. 1954). A Jew in Germany. Etching, 1993. Numbered 6/18, signed, and titled in pencil below platemark. 16 1/4" x 13 5/8" (Sight). 22 7/8" x 19 7/8" (Frame). Matted in a metal frame. Tape residue on top edge of frame. Not examined out of frame. Michael David (b. 1954) is an American painter celebrated for his pioneering encaustic abstractions, later expanding into mixed-media figuration, photography, and environmental sculpture. His work appears in major museum collections including the Met, Guggenheim, and MOCA. Before turning fully to art, David was an active bassist in New York’s late-1970s punk scene, performing with The Numbers and early Plasmatics alongside figures from Television, Blondie, and the Ramones. His multidisciplinary career continues to bridge material experimentation, narrative depth, and a lifelong engagement with music and performance.
