Exquisite antique East Asian hand-carved wood reli

Updated September 20, 2026

antique East Asian hand-carved wood relief panel, likely of Japanese origin, dating from the 19th to early 20th century. It features high-relief carving depicting a dynamic scene from East Asian mythology. Dimension: 12"x 15 1/2". The relief depicts a playful yet powerful interaction between mythical guardian lions, known as Shishi in Japan or Rui Shi in China. The large adult lioness or lion at the bottom is shown with stylized, curly mane details, open jaws, and wide, expressive eyes. Two smaller lion cubs (Shishi cubs) are climbing on and playing around the adult. One is playfully perched on its back, while another rolls near its front paws at the bottom. In traditional Asian folklore, this composition represents parental protection, family lineage, and playful energy.
