Pair of elegant French Louis XVI style side chairs, likely dating to the early 20th century, each featuring a tall rectangular upholstered back framed in warm walnut and surmounted by a finely carved shell-and-scroll crest with classical foliate detailing. The generously proportioned seats and backs are upholstered in a textured neutral cream-and-gray woven fabric, providing a pleasing contrast to the richly toned carved frames, while the chairs are raised on turned and fluted front legs terminating in small casters. The restrained architectural form, molded framing, carved crest elements, and upholstered panel backs give the pair a refined salon or dining-room presence characteristic of French revival furniture. Condition shows age-appropriate wear to the wooden frames with scattered surface marks and finish variation; the upholstery exhibits scattered staining and discoloration, and one chair has a significant area of detached and hanging upholstery trim along the lower edge of the back panel, with additional minor fraying and wear visible. One of the chairs back is loose from seat. Measure 40"H x 19"W x 19"D and seat height is 19"H.
