A powerful and beautifully hand carved vision of Nulliayuk - the revered Inuit sea spirit - by Simon Uttaq of Taloyoak, Nunavut, executed in 2000 and carved in dense, dark green to near black serpentine stone with natural lighter mineral inclusions that subtly animate the surface under light. The composition presents the mythic figure in a forward thrust, the face emerging from a broad ruff that reads as cresting waves, while deeply incised flowing hair sweeps dramatically back to convey speed and current. From every angle the modeling is confident and economical - the facial planes are cut with sure chisel work, the hair is articulated in vigorous parallel channels, and the back swells into smooth, wave like volumes that resolve in crisp, scalloped edges. The underside is inscribed and dated 2000, and the sculpture is accompanied by its original Government of Canada Inuk artist certification tag filled out for Simon Uttaq, Taloyoak, with the title Nulliayuk, confirming authenticity.
Dimensions: 4 in x 7 1/2 in x 4 3/4 in tall.
Condition is very good overall for display, with scattered minor surface rubs and handling marks commensurate with age and the material.
A striking and highly collectible example of contemporary Canadian Indigenous art - Inuit stone carving by a Taloyoak artist - this work unites narrative power with refined carving technique, making it a compelling addition for advanced collectors, museums, and connoisseurs seeking a significant serpentine sculpture depicting Nulliayuk by Simon Uttaq, complete with certification.
66531
