A powerful and impeccably documented example of late 20th century Canadian Inuit sculpture, Putuguk Ashevak’s Face Inuk (1992) presents the haunting emergence of a human visage from a naturally cleaved block of dark grey-black soapstone (steatite). Carved in Taloyoak, Nunavut (formerly Spence Bay), the work measures 7 in. tall x 4 1/2 in. x 3 in. and is accompanied by its original Government of Canada certification tag - hand-inscribed with artist, community, title, and date and numbered 65980 - confirming its creation by a Canadian Inuk artist. Viewed head-on, the countenance rises dramatically from the raw matrix, the sculptor articulating a fur-framed hood with crisp, radiating incisions and a deeply modeled mouth open in mid-utterance; from oblique angles, the relief carving reveals finely cut striations defining the brows, nose, and beard, while the untouched planes and mineral inclusions along the lower edge underscore Ashevak’s dialogue between worked surface and natural stone. The back is intentionally left angular and unpolished, preserving quarry memory and giving the sculpture a commanding, monolithic profile; the underside bears incised script consistent with the artist’s hand. This museum-quality object - rich in cultural resonance and sculptural presence - offers exceptional Inuit art provenance and display impact for the discerning collector, interior, or institutional collection.<br>Condition presents beautifully with only natural stone variations and minor handling consistent with age - ready for the most elevated showcase.<br>65980 <br> <br>
