Bev Doolittle, Beyond Negotiations, 2007. An exceptionally impressive signed and numbered Museum Edition giclée on canvas, number 337/350, representing the scarce large-format edition of one of Doolittle's most dynamic and visually commanding Western compositions. Measuring an extraordinary 26 x 72 inches, this panoramic canvas depicts a formidable group of mounted Crow warriors charging directly toward the viewer, an explosive composition of horses, weaponry, feathered regalia, movement and dust that possesses a cinematic immediacy rarely encountered within Doolittle's oeuvre.<br><br>Beyond Negotiations is particularly significant within Bev Doolittle's celebrated career. When introduced by The Greenwich Workshop in 2007, it represented her first-ever limited-edition release on canvas and her first new full-color limited edition since The Earth Is My Mother in 1999. The prestigious 26 x 72 inch Museum Edition was restricted to only 350 signed and numbered examples and sold out at the publisher. By comparison, the smaller 16 x 44 inch Masterwork Edition was issued in a substantially larger edition of 3,750, making the present large-format Museum Edition the considerably scarcer and more exclusive format.<br><br>The work also represents an intriguing departure from the ingenious visual camouflage for which Doolittle became internationally recognized. Rather than concealing imagery within the landscape, Beyond Negotiations confronts the viewer with unrestrained action. Doolittle herself characterized the composition as one of her relatively few action pieces, deliberately allowing the charging riders to break through the confines of the long horizontal pictorial field to intensify the sensation of depth, dust, movement and imminent impact. The original composition was also notable as Doolittle's first acrylic painting in more than three decades and, at the time, her largest painting.<br><br>The extraordinary panoramic arrangement is among the composition's greatest strengths. Riders emerge from the dusty procession in successive layers before the central mounted warriors appear to surge beyond the background boundary itself. The dominant earth-toned palette, flashes of white and black horses, richly articulated regalia and powerful frontal movement create an image that reads dramatically even across a substantial room. This imposing scale makes the work particularly desirable for collectors of Bev Doolittle, American Western art, Native American subject matter, equestrian art and major contemporary Western limited editions.<br><br>Signed by Bev Doolittle and individually numbered 337/350 at lower right, with Bev Doolittle copyright and 2007 date beneath.
