Magnificent Chinese Porcelain Door Guardian Statue

Updated September 18, 2026

Presented here is a striking Chinese hand-painted porcelain figurine of a Door Guardian (??, Ménshén), a powerful and protective deity in Chinese folk religion and Taoist tradition. This exceptional sculpture likely represents Qin Shubao or Yuchi Gong, two revered generals commonly depicted as temple guardians, warding off evil spirits and inviting good fortune. The figure is meticulously rendered in vibrant enamel glazes with exceptional attention to detail - highlighted by the dramatic facial expression, ornate armor, flowing robes, and ceremonial staff.
Standing proudly on a swirling wave-pattern base, this polychrome glazed ceramic statue is mounted on a wooden plinth and housed in its original brocade presentation box with padded pink satin interior, reflecting high-quality craftsmanship likely intended for altar or ceremonial use. The back of the figure is incised with Chinese calligraphy identifying it as a Door God (??), and a stamped mark in relief on the base confirms its studio origin - translating approximately to "Crafted by Laobiao Fine Workshop" (????). The vibrant palette and sculptural finesse are characteristic of 20th-century Chinese temple art, possibly mid-to-late Republic period or early PRC.
Condition:
The figurine is in excellent condition, with no visible chips, cracks, or restorations. The colors remain rich and vibrant. The original fitted brocade box is also in very good condition, with only minor wear appropriate for age and handling.
Materials:
Hand-painted porcelain/ceramic with enamel overglaze; wooden base; silk-lined brocade storage box.
Dimensions (approximate):
Height (including base): 17.5 inches (44.5 cm), Width: 9.5 inches (24 cm), Depth: 7 inches (18 cm).
This is a rare and collectible piece for those interested in Asian religious art, Chinese guardian deities, or fine handcrafted porcelain. Perfect for display in a home, temple, or as a cultural statement in any art collection.
