This mid-19th-century oval waist belt plate was issued to New York volunteer troops during the American Civil War. The die-struck brass front features embossed serif letters SNY within a raised border. The lead-filled reverse retains threeoriginal brass attachment points including a hook and two studs. The lead backing bears handwritten notations reading FORD 20 and ELY. The plate measures 3.25 inches by 2.25 inches.The brass face displays a deep ochre patina with minor surface scratches and dings consistent with field use. The lead backing shows oxidation and pitting while the original hardware remains secure.
