1956 Gruen Autowind Bumper 17j, Cal 550SS

This is a vintage 1956 Gruen Precision Autowind wristwatch (the "Super Gruen Autowind Rocket" model, introduced September 1956). The sunburst dial is signed "GRUEN PRECISION," "AUTOWIND," and "SWISS," with applied hour markers and luminous hands. The case back is stamped "GRUEN AUTOMATIC, Water and Shock Resistant, Anti-Magnetic," and the inner case back reads "Cased and Timed by Gruen Watch Co, Guildite Back, F34441, 550SS-022" - Guildite is Gruen's trademark name for its stainless steel. The movement is signed "Gruen Watch Co Autowind, Seventeen 17 Jewels, Unadjusted, Swiss, 550 SS," with an "F 1560" marking indicating the caliber is based on the Felsa 1560 - a bumper automatic, using a semicircular oscillating weight rather than a full rotor to self-wind. Case diameter measures 34.71mm excluding the crown, and the watch is fitted with a brown leather strap showing wear from age. This watch is not currently running and will require service to operate.
