First Edition, For Whom the Bell Tolls, written in Havana, Cuba, 1940. This is a hardcover edition of Ernest Hemingway's masterpiece, published by The Blakiston Company, Philadelphia (by arrangement with Charles Scribner's Sons, copyright 1940). Bound in original plum cloth boards featuring a debossed facsimile signature of Ernest Hemingway to the front cover, 8 x 5 1/2 inches. Note: In 1937, Hemingway went to Spain to cover the Spanish Civil War, which formed the basis of this novel. Condition noted: hardcover in fair-to-good vintage condition. Shows heavy edge rubbing, surface soiling to cloth, and a visible split / tearing to the cloth along the lower spine joint edge.
