Pair of vintage bookends molded as an open book with a quill pen and inkwell, finished in warm brown with gold highlights on a black rectangular plinth. Both are labeled on the underside by the Syracuse Ornamental Company - one label reads PATENT PENDING, SyrocoWood, MADE IN U.S.A., SYRACUSE, N.Y., while the second label is rubbed and only partly readable. The consignor listing gave the mark as HY-PRO WOOD, which the photos do not support; these are Syroco, a well-known maker of pressed wood-composition decor from the 1930s through the 1960s. Syroco pieces are molded from wood flour and resin, which is why the carved detail is crisp while the weight stays light - buyers should not expect solid carved wood. Both retain felt pads. Condition is fair, with visible age wear: scattered scratches, paint loss on the high points, and chipping to the black paint along the bases. Sold as-is.
