Finish: Blued barrel and receiver; checkered walnut stock and forearm Condition: Good, honest handling wear consistent with age and use Winchester's short-recoil Model 50 was the company's answer to the autoloading shotgun market of the 1950s, and this example is a Featherweight variant chambered in 12 gauge for 2 3/4" shells. The barrel is factory-marked "WINCHESTER — MODEL 50 — 12 GA — 2 3/4 CHAM — WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL — MADE IN U.S.A." with a "MOD" choke designation stamped just ahead of the receiver, and the receiver ring carries the serial number along with "FEATHERWEIGHT" and the Winchester proof mark. The bolt handle sits distinctively on the underside of the receiver, the hallmark of Model 50 operation, and the action cycles smoothly with its bottom-ejection design. The gun wears a checkered walnut stock and matching forearm in Winchester's diamond-point pattern, finished with a black-and-gold spacer and a checkered wood-tone buttplate at the heel. Handling wear is present throughout, including finish thinning and light surface scratches on the receiver flats, scattered dings and handling marks in the buttstock, and a small chip in the wood at the forend-to-receiver junction — all consistent with a shotgun that saw genuine field use rather than safe-queen storage. The bore and bluing on the barrel remain bright and attractive, and the checkering retains good, crisp definition. A solid, shootable example of a somewhat overlooked mid-century Winchester autoloader — the Model 50 was produced for a relatively short run and is increasingly sought after by Winchester collectors rounding out a lineup of the company's classic scattergun designs, as well as by hunters looking for a smooth-cycling vintage 12 gauge with real field pedigree.
