Title: Help Technique: Acrylic on canvas Measures: 20 x 20 inches (50.8 x 50.8 cm) Year: 1981 Condition: Good condition. The surface presents vivid coloration, layered pigment, gestural linework, and intentionally irregular passages throughout. Minor surface wear and handling marks consistent with age may be present. The canvas appears stable and display-ready, retaining its bold graphic character and overall presentation. Provenance: Formerly in the private collection of Joseph Gallindo; subsequently acquired by family descent and retained in private hands until the present consignment. The above provenance reflects the ownership history that accompanied the artwork at the time it was received for cataloging. Visual Description: This energetic composition presents two mask-like figures surrounded by fragmented symbols, repeated letters, and loosely drawn linear elements. A profile figure occupies the left side against a vivid red field, while a frontal head emerges from the lower right within a dense black passage. A yellow rectangular form, repeated “E” characters, circular motifs, and the word “HELP” contribute to the work’s urgent visual language. Saturated red, yellow, blue, pink, black, and white create a forceful chromatic structure, while overlapping marks and abrupt shifts in scale reinforce its raw Neo-Expressionist energy. Bears an inscription reading “BASQUIAT” near the lower right. Additional Information: The reverse bears several stamps and markings, including “JMB” and a faint catalog-style inscription. One reverse marking appears to reference a different year and slightly different dimensions; bidders should review all photographs and conduct their own inspection. These markings are recorded for cataloging purposes and do not independently establish authenticity or provenance. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
