PAIR OF ANTIQUE HAND-FORGED "H" BRANDING IRONS, LONG-HANDLED CATTLE BRANDS WITH LOOPED GRIPS, APPROXIMATELY 36 INCHES Two genuine old hand-forged livestock branding irons, both cut with the same letter H brand face. Each is made from a long round iron shank, roughly three feet, hand-bent with a rolled loop grip at the handle end and forge-welded at the other end to a flat-bar brand head formed as the letter H, two upright side bars joined by a center crossbar. The forge welds where the shank meets the head are plainly visible as built-up, hammered joints, and the two heads are slightly different in proportion and weld placement, which is exactly what you expect from irons made at different times by hand rather than stamped out of a catalog. Both show heavy overall pitted rust, fire scale, and old burnt discoloration on the brand faces, the honest look of irons that were actually heated and used. These are real ranch tools, not modern souvenir stamps, and they display extremely well in a western, ranch, barn, or lodge setting hung on a wall or leaned in a corner, and they are equally at home in a cattle-country collection, a bunkhouse-themed room, or a steakhouse or restaurant dcor wall. An H brand is one of the most common and most recognizable letter brands, so these appeal to any buyer whose ranch, family, or surname starts with H. Neither iron carries a maker mark, a registered brand number, a ranch name, or any other identifying stamp, so no specific ranch or brand registration is claimed. Sold as a lot of two irons. Description Two long-handled forged iron branding irons, matching in design and both bearing an H brand face. Each shank is round iron stock, hand-drawn and slightly irregular in diameter, gently curved and bowed along its length from age and use, ending in a flattened, bent-over loop or eye grip at the handle end. Each brand head is built from flat bar stock formed into the letter H, with two parallel upright bars joined by a single center crossbar, and the shank forge-welded to the back of the crossbar. The forge welds and hammer work at the shank-to-head joints are clearly visible, thick and irregular, consistent with blacksmith construction rather than machine manufacture. The two heads differ slightly from one another: on one iron the shank meets the crossbar with a broader, more spread weld and the side bars stand a bit taller, while on the other the joint is narrower with a raised hump of weld metal. The pair is a matched working set by brand letter, not an identical factory pair. Brand faces are the flat edges of the bars, worn and scaled, with old carbon and heat discoloration on the striking faces. No maker's mark, foundry stamp, initials, ranch name, brand registration number, date, or any other lettering is visible anywhere on either iron, so none is claimed.
