VINTAGE PYREX SOLID PINK No. 404 FOUR-QUART NESTING MIXING BOWL, MADE IN USA OVENWARE, LARGEST SIZE IN THE 400 SERIES A large piece of mid-century American kitchen glass and the biggest bowl in the Pyrex nesting series. Pyrex No. 404, the four-quart round mixing bowl, in the solid pink exterior over white opal glass, with a plain white interior, a crisp raised rib below the rim, and a small flat foot. The underside is clearly molded 404 4 QT. / TRADE MARK / 1 / PYREX / / MADE IN U.S.A. / OVENWARE. Solid pink Pyrex is one of the collector-favorite 1950s color lines, and the 404 is the hardest size to find because it took the most abuse in daily kitchen use and is usually the bowl missing from a set. This one is honest, well-used kitchen glass: the pink surface carries heavy overall scratching, dark utensil and pencil-type gray marks, rub marks, and dulling and light fading of the color, most of it across the sides and the underside. It still displays well as a bread-dough or fruit bowl and is a good filler for a collector trying to complete a solid pink 401-402-403-404 nesting set. This is the third Pyrex lot in this sale, offered along with the pair of white Pyrex milk-glass bowls and the yellow Pyrex mixing bowl elsewhere in the catalog. No lid, no other bowls, and no box are included. Sold as one bowl. Description Pyrex opal glass round nesting mixing bowl, deep rounded body with a raised horizontal rib just under the rim, a plain unrimmed lip, and a small recessed flat foot ring. Exterior finished in solid pink over the white opal body; the rim edge and the entire interior are plain white; the underside of the foot is white where the color stops. Underside molded mark, quoted as read from the photographs: 404 4 QT., TRADE MARK, the mold number 1 in the center gap, PYREX across the middle, a registered trademark in a circle, and MADE IN U.S.A. / OVENWARE around the lower arc. The 404 is the four-quart size and the largest of the four nesting bowls; the additional single digit 1 in the center is a mold number, not a date. Approximately 10 1/2 inches across the rim and approximately 5 inches tall per the tape-measure photographs. In the diameter shots the tape is laid across the rim with the hook resting on the far rim edge rather than clamped, and in the height shot the tape body stands on the table beside the bowl rather than against it, so both figures are close estimates only. No exact capacity was measured with liquid; the four-quart figure is the molded factory rating. Bidders should verify all dimensions from the photographs. No lid, no smaller nesting bowls, no original box, and no paper label are present, and none is claimed. Attribution note Pyrex was introduced by Corning Glass Works in 1915 as a heat-resistant clear glass bakeware line, and in the mid-1940s Corning added opal ware, the white glass body with color applied to the outside, which is what this bowl is.
